What to Expect at Your First Sports Massage

Whether you’re training for an event, dealing with tight muscles from work, or simply feeling stiff and achy, booking your first sports massage can feel a little intimidating if you don’t know what to expect. At LMH Optimal Therapy, we see clients from all walks of life, from runners and gym-goers to office workers and busy parents, and one of the most common things we hear is: “I wish I’d booked one sooner!”

A sports massage is about far more than relaxation. It’s a targeted treatment designed to reduce muscle tension, improve movement, support recovery, and help your body function at its best. Here’s exactly what you can expect during your first appointment.

Before Your Massage Begins

Your first session starts with a conversation.

Your therapist will ask questions about:

  • Your lifestyle and activity levels

  • Any pain, stiffness, or injuries you’re experiencing

  • Your training routine or work habits

  • Previous injuries or medical conditions

  • What you want to get out of the treatment

This helps us tailor the session specifically to your body and your goals. Every treatment at LMH Optimal Therapy is personalised - because no two bodies are the same.

Good to know: You don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from sports massage.

Many people book sports massage for:

✔ Neck and shoulder tension from desk work

✔ Tight hips or lower back pain

✔ Recovery after exercise

✔ General muscle stiffness

✔ Headaches linked to muscle tension

✔ Injury prevention and mobility support

What Happens During the Massage?

Your therapist will usually begin with an assessment of movement, posture, and muscle tension to identify problem areas.

The massage itself may involve a combination of:

  • Deep tissue massage

  • Trigger point therapy

  • Muscle stretching

  • Soft tissue release techniques

  • Mobility-focused work

Unlike a spa massage, sports massage is more targeted and treatment-focused. Some areas may feel tender or intense, especially if muscles are particularly tight, but communication is key. Your therapist will always work within a level that feels manageable for you.

Common Areas We Treat

Sports massage treatments are often focused around areas that become overloaded through sport, exercise, posture, or everyday life.

Some of the most common treatment areas include:

Area

Common Symptoms

Neck & Shoulders

Tension, headaches, desk posture pain

Lower Back

Stiffness, reduced mobility, aching

Legs & Calves

Post-run soreness, tightness

Glutes & Hips

Gym tightness, reduced flexibility

Upper Back

Poor posture and muscular tension

Will It Hurt?

This is probably the question we get asked most. The truth is sports massage can feel intense at times, but it should never feel unbearable. Tight muscles and trigger points can feel tender when treated, particularly if they’ve been irritated for a while, but typically clients describe it as a “good pain” that feels productive and relieving afterwards.

Your therapist will always check in with you throughout the session, and treatments can be adjusted depending on your pain tolerance and goals.

What Happens Afterwards?

After your massage, you may feel:

  • Looser and more mobile

  • Relaxed and lighter

  • Slightly tender for 24–48 hours

  • A little tired afterwards

This is completely normal, especially after your first treatment.

To help your recovery after a sports massage try to:

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Keep gently moving throughout the day

  • Avoid intense training immediately afterwards

  • Follow any stretches or rehab advice provided

  • Listen to your body and allow time to recover

How Often Should You Have a Sports Massage?

This depends entirely on your lifestyle and goals.

Some people benefit from:

  • Monthly maintenance treatments

  • Regular sessions during heavy training periods

  • Occasional appointments when tension builds up

  • Injury-focused treatment plans

At LMH Optimal Therapy, we’ll always recommend a plan that works for your body, training, and lifestyle, with no pressure or unnecessary appointments.

Your First Session Is About Understanding Your Body

Whether you’re preparing for an event, recovering from training, or simply fed up with everyday aches and stiffness, sports massage can be an incredibly effective part of your recovery and wellbeing routine.

If you’ve been thinking about booking your first appointment, this is your sign to give your body the attention it deserves. Whether you’re an athlete, gym-goer, office worker, or simply feeling tight and run down, we’re here to help you move and feel your best.
