Feeling Stressed or Overwhelmed? Here’s How to Rebalance Your Nervous System Naturally

As we honour Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s a timely reminder to check in with our bodies - and more importantly, our nervous systems. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or emotionally drained, your nervous system might be out of balance. The good news? You have more control than you think.

At LMH Optimal Therapy, we support your physical and emotional well-being with a whole-body approach to healing. One of the key systems we focus on is your nervous system - the communication route between your brain and your body. When it’s overloaded, symptoms like tension, fatigue, brain fog, and irritability often follow.

Why Your Nervous System Matters

Your nervous system regulates everything from your stress response to your sleep patterns. When it's out of sync, you feel it - both mentally and physically.

Feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Try these natural techniques to help bring your nervous system back into balance -no fancy equipment or big time commitments required.

1. Practice Slow, Deep Breathing

Deep diaphragmatic breathing signals to your body that it’s safe to relax. Just five minutes a day can calm your heart rate, reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), and help bring your nervous system back into balance.

How to include it in daily life:

  • Start your morning with 10 deep belly breaths before you even get out of bed.

  • Use deep breathing while commuting - especially if you're stuck in traffic or on a crowded bus.

  • Pause for a minute of breathing before meals to help your body shift into a relaxed, "rest and digest" mode.

  • Try the 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Repeat 4 times to reduce tension fast.

2. Move Your Body Gently - Especially Your Spine

Gentle movement, particularly spinal mobility exercises, helps nourish the spinal cord and improve the brain-body connection. Think of your spine as a conduit for calm: when it moves well, you function better.

How to include it in daily life:

  • Begin and end your day with a few minutes of cat-cow stretches or gentle spinal twists.

  • Set a timer every hour to stand up, stretch, and roll your shoulders or neck.

  • Take walking phone calls instead of sitting still - try adding a few spinal rotations as you go.

  • Incorporate spinal movement into your morning or bedtime routine with yoga or Pilates-inspired stretches.

3. Reconnect With Nature

Nature has a powerful grounding effect. It helps regulate your sensory input and encourages a state of calm presence. Whether it's a walk along the beach or simply noticing the breeze on your skin, time in nature can restore nervous system balance.

How to include it in daily life:

  • Take a short walk during your lunch break - even five minutes around the block counts.

  • Spend a few moments barefoot in the garden or at the beach to connect with natural surfaces.

  • Swap indoor workouts for an outdoor one, like stretching on the grass or jogging in the park.

  • Use your five senses outdoors - notice the sound of birds, the smell of salt air, or the texture of leaves.

How Chiropractic Care Supports Your Mental Health

Did you know that chiropractic care can help calm your nervous system? By improving spinal alignment and reducing physical tension, chiropractic adjustments allow your brain and body to communicate more clearly. This leads to:

  • Lower stress levels

  • Improved mood and clarity

  • Better sleep

  • A deeper sense of calm
